Abstract

525,339. Typewriters. UNDERWOOD ELLIOTT FISHER CO. Feb. 17, 1939, No. 5405. Convention date, June 30, 1938. [Class 100 (iv)] Keys.-In touch-adjusting devices comprising a rocking member operated by each key-lever and co-operating with an adjustable, yielding lever-device, adjustment is effected by a regulator which is accessible for ready manual operation. In the device shown in the Figure a bar 42, mounted at the ends on pivots 38, is provided with a plate 43 having fingers 41 which engage the key-levers 16 and are so graded in length that key-levers in different banks impart uniform movement to the bar. The fingers are bendable for adjustment. A finger 45 on the bar co-operates with a yielding device consisting of a leaf spring 47 secured to a plate 48 which is mounted on a pivot 50. The spring is tapered and is formed with a bead 49 for engaging the finger. The plate 48 is connected by linkage 70, 64 to a bell-crank 57 which is arranged at the front of the machine and has a knob or regulator 54 projecting through a slot in the front masking- plate. The knob is set with reference to a touchscale and is retained by co-operation of a pin 73 and rack 75. Movement of the knob rocks the spring 47 forwards or backwards to adjust the touch.
