Abstract

525,060. Coating paper. DYKES, W. U. (Warren Co., S. D.). Feb. 13, 1939, No. 4696. [Classes 96 and 140] In apparatus for coating fibrous sheet material such as paper of the kind in which a layer of fluid 'coating composition is deposited on an impervious transfer surface, smoothed by a doctor and transferred to the fibrous sheet, an air doctor disposed transversely of and parallel to the plane of the transfer surface is used. The transfer surface may be a roll or endless belt of metal or rubber. The air doctor may be provided with means for varying the distance between it and the transfer surface, the thickness of the sheet of air, and the angle at which it is projec'ted. Suitable air doctors are those described in Specification 483,998 or U.S.A. Specification 1,980,923. Duplicate equipment may be used to coat both sides of the web simultaneously. As shown in Fig. 1, a web of paper 1 from a Fourdrinier wire 2 is pressed between rolls 3, 4 and passed between rolls 5, 6. Roll 5 dips into a tank 9 supplied with fluid coating composition from a storage tank 8 by a pump 13. The coating picked up by roll 5 is smoothed by an air doctor 12 and transferred to and squeezed into the web as it passes between rolls 5, 6. Roll 5 may rotate in the same or opposite direction to that of the web, and its peripheral speed may be the same, or greater or less than the speed of travel of the web. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the coating material may be delivered from tank 9 to an applying roll 18 by a roll 22 and the web may be held against roll 18 by its own tension between rolls 23, 24. The roll 18 may be replaced by an endless belt, whereby, if desired, the coating composition may be thickened by evaporation during its travel on the belt.
