Abstract
525,014. Purifying sugar. APPLIED SUGAR LABORATORIES, Inc. Feb. 11, 1939, No. 4542. Convention date, April 5, 1938. [Class 127] Raw sugar, before affination, is dissolved, defecated and chemically bleached to produce a refined syrup. The raw sugar is dissolved in water, calcium hydroxide is added to bring the pH to about 7.5 then phosphoric acid or dicalcium phosphate to produce a pH of 6.5 to 6.8. A small quantity of diatomaceous earth or kaolin may be added. The mixture is centrifuged, and the separated syrup may be treated with activated carbon and filtered. The filtrate is treated with calcium hypochlorite followed by acid calcium phosphate or phosphoric acid. The syrup is freed from the precipitated phosphate and then passed through granular carbon to remove halogens. Hypobromites or hypochlorites of other alkaline earth or alkali metals may be used. The initial defecation may be effected by calcium carbonate or calcium sulphite precipitated in situ, instead of tricalcium phosphate.
