Abstract

524,009. Pipe joints. WATT, W., and JACKSON, J. July 13, 1939, No. 17444/38. [Class 99 (i)] Copper pipes are joined to withstand the normal mains water pressure by forming on the pipes flanges 6, 8a of different lengths and then turning over the longer flange so that it embraces the shorter flange. In a modified form of joint the two flanges are of the same size and the joint is made by a ring which is turned over and squeezed into contact with the flanges. If preferred, the ring may be passed over the pipe, the free end being turned over to hold the flanges in contact. Packing may be inserted in the joint and pipes of different sizes may be joined. The joint may be made on the formers 1, 3, 4, shown in Fig. 1. The flanges 6, 8a are formed by forcing pipe ends which are held in the formers 3, 4 on to the central former 1. The former 1 is then withdrawn and the flange 6 inserted in the cup-shape flange 8a after which the edge of the flange 8a is turned over by its engagement with the face 10 of the former 3.
