Abstract
523,868. Sharpening cutlery blades. BRITISH EMULSIFIERS, Ltd., and CURZON, T. Jan. 17, 1939, No. 1628. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A small portable machine with rotary grinding-wheel or file for the domestic sharpening of cutlery blades has a wheel 4 mounted at an acute angle to the vertical upon the armature shaft of a motor 1 on a shaft driven from a hand crank through gearing. The centre of the wheel is recessed and there may be in addition one or more annular grooves 14. A guide member 15 has teeth projecting into these grooves or recesses and it is also inclined at an acute angle to the vertical in the other direction. In grinding the blade is held vertically so as substantially to bisect the angle between the wheel and guide. A slot 16 in the casing assists in maintaining this position. The wheel may have a guide and slot co-acting with its other face so that both sides of the blade may be ground alternately. In a modification the guide prongs have different inclinations so that their surfaces lie approximately on a helix. The various prongs intersect the plane of the slot in a common line and it is here that the edge of the blade rests. The prongs are preferably thin to remove burrs as the blade is drawn through the slot.
