Abstract

523,580. Knitting-machines ; tensioning yarns &c. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and WHOLTON, F. Jan. 6, 1939, No. 545. [Class 74 (ii)] [Also in Group IX] To compensate for variations in the tensior in yarns, threads &c fed, e.g., to the needle! of a knitting - machine a device is provided comprising two fixed guides 2, 3, a frictior surface 4 and a movable guide 10 attached to a hollow disc 5 containing a loosely inserted stabilizing weight. The friction surface 4 may be a glass or porcelain rod or may form part of a cymbal tension device, and the hollow disc may be of metal or of plastic material such as cellulose acetate. The loosely inserted weight may be a heavy liquid such as mercury or may be one or more metal balls. An adjustable weight 11 is arranged upon the disc to balance the guide 10, and the. disc 5 is freely mounted so that the guide can move across the direct path between the friction surface 4 and the fixed guide 3. Electrical contacts 12: are provided so that when the tension in a yarn &c. is unduly reduced or upon breakage of the yarn, a circuit including the contacts 12 and the arm 9 carrying the balance weight 11 is made, so that a bell is rung, or a knock-off device is operated to stop the machine.
