Abstract
523,300. Aircraft undercarriages. STEVENS, A. H. (Cleveland Pneumatic Tool Co.). Dec. 30, 1938, No. 37857. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXXII] A hydraulic shock-absorber for aircraft undercarriages and other purposes comprises a pair of telescoping cylinders provided respectively with an integral spline portion and a separate cooperating spline portion, the separate spline portion being of softer metal than the cylinder provided with the integral spline portion. In the form shown, Figs. 1 and 2, a shockabsorber comprises two telescoping cylinders 10 and 13. A partition 17 in the outer cylinder has a central port 18 and a series of small ports 19 near its periphery. The port 18 is normally closed by means of a valve plate 20 held by coiled springs 21. The portion 11 of the outer cylinder has spline grooves 23 extending throughout its length. The cylinder 13 has a smooth exterior for the greater part of its length but in the thickened portion near the top is provided with key slots in which are fitted keys 32 made from a softer metal than that of the two cylinders. In the lower portion of the cylinder 10 is mounted an oil-tight packing 24. The part 13 carries a ground-wheel 28. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the keys may be provided on a removable sleeve 46 which is held against rotation relative to the inner cylinder by pins 47 and secured by a threaded head 49
