Abstract
522,890. Indicating proximity of earth or other bodies. WILD, E. G. Nov. 30, 1938, No. 34822. [Class 37] For measuring distances a wireless transmitter and receiver are arranged so that a transmitted beam is reflected from the ground or other object and received by the receiver, the amplitude of the received wave being indicated. The apparatus is applicable for indicating the altitude of an aeroplane or the distance of an obstruction or for range-finding. A transmitter T and receiver R are arranged on the body of an aeroplane for measuring the height above ground G. The transmitter or receiver or both are directional and may be crystal controlled at a fixed frequency. The indicator D may be a milliammeter calibrated in heights, and may have several scales for different ranges, these scales being changed automatically by relays. A second transmitting set Tx and receiving set Rx are mounted on the wings for indicating the distance of a hill Gx in the path of the plane. The transmitting and receiving sets as well as the indicator or meter, may be screened, and the aerials may be contained in troughs of polished metal.
