Abstract
522,527. Sand-blast. McGIBBON, W. Dec. 12, 1938, Nos. 36125/38 and 380/39. [Class 60] Apparatus for removing carbon deposit from the valves of internal combustion engines, comprises a casing 1 within which are, two nozzles, 2, 3, which respectively direct blasts of shot, grit, or other abrasive, on to the face 4 and neck 5, and on to the crown 6 of a poppet valve located in the casing with its stem 8 projecting through the casing wall. The nozzle 2 is mounted to swivel at 7 and passes through a flexible rubber diaphragm 2<SP>1</SP>, and the nozzle 3 may be disposed on an axis parallel to, but offset slightly from the axis of the valve ; compressed air or other pressure fluid is supplied to the nozzles by tubes 10 and the grit &c. is picked up from the bottom of the casing, by injector action, through pipes 9. Externally of the casing, the valve stem 8 is engaged by a chuck 11 rotatable by a hand-wheel 16 and movable axially by a lever 17, and the nozzle 2 is swivelled by a handle 18 operating through links 19. The stem 8 passes through the casing wall by a bore 12 which is fitted with a gland 13 having an annular passage 14 round the bore and converging to the inner end thereof, egress of grit &c. through the bore being prevented by supplying compressed air &c. at 15 to the passage 14. The casing 1 has a hinged lid 21, which may be provided with a glazed inspection opening 23 and a lamp to illuminate the interior of the casing ; a filter bag 20 is fitted to the outlet of the casing.
