Abstract
521,727. Artificial filaments; sulphonium compounds; wetting agents. VEREINIGTE GLANZSTOFF FABRIKEN AKT.-GES. Nov. 25, 1938, No. 34322. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1937. [Classes 2 (ii), 2 (iii), and 15 (ii)] To facilitate spinning and to prevent the formation of incrustations in the spinnerets, there is added to the viscose spinning solution a small amount of a cation-active sulphonium condensation product obtained by the action in substantial absence of water of organic sulphides selected from the group consisting of dialkyl sulphides, diaryl sulphides and alkyl-aryl sulphides of the general formula R,SR 2 , on halogenated constituents of petroleum having more than eight carbon atoms. The halogenated hydrocarbon may be obtained from crude petroleum, kerosene, gasoline, lubricating oil, pasty petrolatum, liquid petrolatum, or paraffin wax. The coagulating bath may be a solution of sulphuric acid with a zinc salt, and it may also contain a sulphonium compound similar to that contained in the spinning solution. Petroleum constituents which belong to the methane, polymethylene, or benzene series may be used. The hydrocarbons may be dissolved in carbon tetrachloride or other solvent and chlorine or bromine may then be passed through the solution. The reaction may be carried out in presence of iron or other catalyst or in the presence of ultra-violet rays, or in presence of silica gel, active carbon, nickel or pumice, or other absorbent. Chlorination may be effected in presence of iodine as catalyst. Disulphides which may be used include dimethyl, diethyl, dibutyl, dibenzyl, diphenyl, and methyl-benzyl sulphide. The sulphonium compounds are obtained by heating the sulphides with the halogenated hydrocarbons preferably under reflux. The two components may first be dissolved in benzene, ether, toluene, or other solvent. The products may be used in the crude state or after purification. The sulphonium compound may be a chloride, bromide, iodide, or fluoride. It may be converted in the viscose solution into a free sulphonium base. The presence of the sulphonium compound in the viscose may lead to the production of filaments of softer lustre.
