Abstract

521,385. Tobacco pipes. MODINE, A. B. April 21, 1939, No. 12098. [Class 130] A pipe is provided with a thermostatically controlled air intake communicating with the duct in the stem. In one form, Figs. 2 and 3, the bowl 8 and mouthpiece 11 are connected by a stem 9 having an air-inlet port 23 controlled by a valve 24 carried by a bimetallic strip 25 riveted at 26 to the stem. The valve can be closed manually by pressure on the end of the bimetallic strip. The stem is formed with longitudinal corrugations 15 and fitted with an absorbent cartridge 18 of cotton or the like, encircled by a yoke 28 provided with a rod 29 for its manipulation. In a modification, Fig. 6, the air-inlet 32 is connected by a passage 31 with the smoke duct and the valve 24a is carried by a bimetallic strip 25a encircling the bowl 8a.
