Abstract
520,625. Vermin-destroying compositions; medicinal preparations. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., and MAXWELL, R. W. July 25, 1938, No. 22092. [Class 81 (i)] [Also in Groups IV, III, and XX] Thickeners, for use, inter al´a, in agricultural insecticidal sprays, cod-liver oil emulsions, essential oil emulsions, cosmetics, toilet pre-. parations and lotions, are obtained by treating starch, a modified starch or a water-soluble derivative thereof, with less than one molecular proportion, per C 6 H 0 O 5 unit of the starch molecule, of #:#<SP>1</SP>-dichlordiethyl ether under such conditions that less than one quarter of a molecular proportion thereof enters into reaction. Specified starting-materials are corn, wheat, rice, cassava, sago, arrowroot and potato starches, oxidized starches, dextrinized starches such as British gum, and starch ethers, esters or ether-esters containing free hydroxyl groups, e.g., methyl, ethyl and hydroxyalkyl starches, starch gylcollic acid, starch acetate, propionate or sulphate, methyl-ethyl starch, methyl starch acetate, and ethyl starch glycollate. Examples relate to the treatment (1) of potato starch successively with sodium chloracetate and #:#<SP>1</SP>-dichlorodiethyl ether, and (2) of cassava starch successively with dimethyl sulphate and #:#<SP>1</SP>-dichlorodiethyl ether. Specification, 454,963, [Group (iv)], is referred to.
