Abstract

520,365. Making compound plates &c. MILLER, E. Feb. 2, 1939, No. 3523. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Soldering.-In plating a ferrous metal body with copper, nickel, aluminium or their alloys or with chromium-nickel steel, the ferrous body is coated galvanically first with nickel and then with copper or copper alloy and the plating sheet, if not rich in copper is galvanically coated with copper or copper alloy and the parts are then superposed and united by heat and pressure. The composite body may be subjected in hot or cold state to rolling or drawing without causing the detachment of the plating sheet. A pack of such sheets may be treated with plating sheets on one or both sides of the ferrous body. In plating an iron body with a chromiumnickel steel sheet, the parts are first coated with nickel and then with copper and the superposed parts are heated at about 1000‹C. for 2-3 hours under a pressure of 1 kg. per sq. mm., so as to form a diffusion alloy between the copper and nickel without impairing the properties of the steel sheet. In plating an iron body with aluminium the iron body has a first galvanic coating of nickel and a second coating of copper and tin and the aluminium has a coating of copper and tin. In plating an iron body with copper, nickel &c. the iron body has a first coating of nickel and a second coating of brass, red brass &c. and the copper &c. sheet a coating of alloys of copper and tin or copper and zinc. If the plating sheet has a high percentage of copper it may remain uncoated. When there is considerable difference in ductility between the iron body and the plating sheet, heavy coatings are applied. Thus an iron or steel plate 30 mm. thick plated with a chromiumnickel steel sheet 3 mm. thick has coatings together equal to about one-third of the thickness. of the plating sheet. In such cases coatings of normal thickness may be first applied and an intermediate sheet of copper-zinc alloy or silver-copper alloy inserted. If subsequent annealing is required the intermediate sheet should have a melting point between 1000- 1040‹C.
