Abstract
520,359. Cam mechanism. BISHOP, R., and JOHNSTON, R. H. Oct. 29, 1938. No. 31369. [Class 80 (iii)] In gearing wherein a cam 1 is engaged by a follower 2 on a rocker arm 4 actuating a shaft 5, the centre line 11 of the rocker arm when the gear is in mid-position, is inclined to a plane normal to the axis of the worm at an angle equal or substantially equal to the pitch angle of the thread of the worm at the point of contact of the cam and follower. Thus, in the usual gears of this type, the axis of the rocker shaft 5 is at 12, whereas in a gear according to the invention it is at 13. This results in equal efforts being required to move the rocker arm through equal angles on opposite sides of the mid-position. Further, there is less variation in the thickness of the threads of the worm and excessive wear at the end x of the worm is obviated. The gearing is applicable to the steering of vehicles and to the actuation of the throttle or ignition timing of internal-combustion engines. Specification 223,963. [CLass 80 (iii)], is referred to.
