520,198. Extraction of phenols. I.G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. Oct. 14, 1938, No. 29848. Convention date, Oct. 14, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] Phenols are extracted from aqueous solution thereof by a liquid ester of carboxylic acids the boiling point of which is sufficiently below the boiling point of the phenols to permit separation of the esters from the phenols by distillation. The aqueous phenolic solution may result from carbonization of coal, hydrogenation, or the preparation of phenols from halogen benzenes or benzene sulphonic acids. Suitable esters are ethyl and butyl acetate. Any ester left in the water after extraction may be recovered by steam distillation, or by active carbon or by salting out. The ester may be employed in admixture with a solvent miscible therewith but insoluble in water, e.g. benzene or toluene. Continuous extraction may be performed by causing the phenolic liquors to enter a tower at the top and the esters at the bottom.
