[Class 120 (ii)] In a yarn winding machine in which the bobbin is drawn by a drum having a continuous and helical groove for traversing the yarn along the bobbin, the yarn is guided in the correct part of the groove by a guide bar mounted in front of the drum and adapted to move between two opposite positions in which it lies obliquely to the axis of the drum, the guide bar being moved rapidly from one of its positions to the other when the yarn has to change its direction of traverse and being held stationary in one or other of the positions throughout the greater part of a traverse in one direction ; the guide bar is preferably rocked to and fro between the two oblique positions by means of a link driven by a cam rotated in timed relation with the drum so that the cam rotates once during the time the drum rotates a number of turns corresponding to twice the number of turns of the helical groove in each direction. As shown the yarn passes under a rod 22 on the rocking bar 20 which is rocked on the pivot 21 by a bell-crank lever, 12, 14 the arm 14 thereof being pivoted to the bar and the arm 12 carrying a roller held by a spring 16 against the cam 9 carried by a pinion 8 driven by a pinion 7 on the drum shaft 2. The bar 20 is actuated by the cam so that it takes the position A-A while the yarn is travelling from the point E to the point G and the position B-B when the yarn is travelling from the point G to the point E, the movement of the bar from one oblique position to the other taking place during the time the yarn is then travelling from the point G to the point H and back again and during the time it is travelling from the point E to the point F and back again.
