[Class 94 (i)] In a machine for packing tobacco or similar fibrous or powdered material in a paper cup and-inserting the cup into a tin, the tobacco is poured into a preformed cup supported in a holder, the partly filled cup is then pressed into a tin leaving the upper part of the walls of the cup projecting, and the projecting part of the walls is then pressed downwards and inwards towards the tobacco while the cup is rotating. The machine comprises a number of hoppers 1, Fig. 1, mounted on a table 2 which is rotated step-by-step by a Geneva mechanism 36 to carry the hoppers past several stations. At any of the stations 3, 4, 5 the attendant places a preformed cup into the hopper, and at station 6 the cup is pressed down into the hopper by a plunger 7, Fig. 2, so that the upper edge of cup engages beneath a shoulder 43 in the hopper. At station 8, a weighed portion of tobacco is poured into the cup by means of an elevator 9 and a funnel 10 of known construction, and the tobacco is pressed down into the cup at station 11 by a plunger 47. The plungers 7 and 47 are carried by a reciprocating spider 46, and another reciprocating , spider 52 beneath the table carries plunger 49, 50, 51 which move upwards to support the cup against the pressure of the upper plungers. The plungers 7 and 49 have co-operating punches 60 and dies 61 for perforating a code signal on the bottom of the cup. A coupon may be inserted in the cup at station 12, and at station 13 the partly filled cup is pressed out of the hopper into a tin 62 which has been removed from a magazine 15 by a conveyor 14. When the hopper arrives at station 13, the tin is lifted by a pronged pusher 63 into the hopper, and a plunger 48 presses the cup into the tin. The plunger and the pusher then carry the tin downwards on to the conveyer. The tin is next carried to a station 16 where a paper or card disc is inserted on top of the tobacco. The disc is fed from a magazine in known manner, and is delivered between ledges 70, Fig. 5, and the side portions 71 of an opening in a guide plate 69. The size of the opening is such that the disc 66 takes up a bowed formation. A plunger 74 presses the disc into the tin. At the next station 17, the tin is transferred by a rotating arm 81 to a second conveyer 18 provided with pockets 19 which receive the tins and are rotatable about their vertical axes. At station 21, the walls of the paper cup are scored along a line inside the mouth of the tin by a scoring device rotated by an oscillating arm 104. The tobacco is pressed again at station 22, and the tin is carried into contact with, and rotated by, a moving belt 23. The rotating tin moves under a plough 24 which engagaes the upstanding wall of the cup and presses it inwards and downwards. The tin, while still rotating, is carried to a capping station 25 where a screw-on lid, taken from a supply by a suction device, is pressed downwards on to the tin and is screwed-on by the rotation of the tin. Finally, the filled and capped tin is pushed on to a delivery shoot 27.
