Abstract

519,155. Wave motors. PREMOLI, L. May 9, 1939, No. 13832. [Class 69 (i)] Apparatus for utilizing wave energy comprises a float connected by a cable to a drum, the resulting oscillations of which are caused to rotate a flywheel in a constant direction by gears operating through one-way clutches, a second flywheel being rotated from the first at constant speed through a rack operated by a rocker arm with a movable fulcrum and gears with one-way clutches. In the apparatus shown, a wave-operated float 1 oscillates a drum 4 by means of a cable 2 passing round the drum and connected to the float, the return movements of the drum being effected by a counterweight 5. The drum imports uni-directional but non- uniform rotation to a flywheel 12 through toothed gears 6, 7 and chain gears 8, 10, each pair of gears operating through a free-wheel device acting in the opposite sense to the other. The flywheel 12 drives a rocking beam 14 through a connecting-rod 13, the beam operating a rack 16 which drives, through a pair of oppositelyacting free-wheel gears, a pulley 24, the speed of which is rendered uniform by means which automatically move the fulcrum 15 of the beam 14. For this purpose a governor may be employed, as shown in Fig. 2.
