Abstract

518,555. Yarns and threads. CARBIDE & CARBON CHEMICALS CORPORATION. Aug. 27, 1938, No. 25194. Convention date, Sept. 15, 1937. Drawings to Specification. [Class 120 (iii)] [Also in Group IV] Artificial fibres, filaments, threads, or yarns are made from vinyl resin obtained by conjoint polymerisation of a vinyl halide and a vinyl ester of an aliphatic acid and containing a predominant amount of vinyl halide, and having an average molecular weight of at least 15,000. 'The resinous component may contain 80-95 per cent of vinyl halide. A solution or dispersion of the resin is formed into filaments by extrusion. The filaments may be twisted or doubled and subjected to stretching. Stretching may be effected in presence of solvents or with heating. The stretched materials have high true elasticity, and. high dry and wet strength. They are flexible, thermoplastic, and non-inflammable. Polymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate may be used. Stretching of the yarn may be effected in cold or hot water containing a wetting agent. After stretching, the yarn may be set by ageing under tension or by immersing the yarn in water. The yarn may then be subjected to flexing operations. When staple fibres are to be obtained the stretching may be omitted. The staple fibres may be used in conjunction with wool or cotton fibres. Partial fusion on heating of the vinyl resin permits stiffening of mixed yarns to be obtained. The yarns may be knitted woven or braided: They may be used in making filtering fabrics, fishing nets and lines, acid- and alkali-resistant clothing, protective pipe coverings, shower curtains, or electrical insulations. Articles having wire or rubber filaments with a core of the polyvinyl compound filaments may be obtained. Specifications 426,744, 437,773, [both in Group IV], and 475,635, [Group III], are referred to.
