517,438. Control of A.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 27, 1938, No. 22366. Convention date, July 30, 1937. [Class 38 (iii)] The motor 11 is started by energizing both its windings 12, 13, and two bi-metallic strips 14, 15, in circuit therewith are heated. Both strips bend in the same direction but one more quickly than the other so that contacts 17, 18, are opened to disconnect the starting winding 13, by the time the motor reaches normal speed. The strip 15 is disconnected and returns to its normal position while the strip 14 remains connected across a portion of the starting winding. It thus receives current determined by the motor speed. If the motor stalls or slows down the energization of the strip 14 is reduced and the strip returns to reclose the starting winding circuit.
