[Class 87 (ii)] In machines for sanding, marking, or rusticating bricks or an extruded clay strip, the four surfaces around the bricks or strip are acted upon simultaneously by four pressure rollers having stationary axes of rotation and so located that their pressure lines are in the same plane, the rollers acting to press sand or markings or both into the surfaces of the bricks &c. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the bricks travel on an endless belt 1 that is supported on rollers and is fed with sand, mortar, slurry &c. from a hopper 2. The upper faces .and ends of the bricks are covered with sand &c. from a hopper 17 having an adjustable opening through which the bricks pass: The sand is pressed into the surfaces of the bricks by vertical and horizontal rollers 6, 7, 8, arranged with their contact or pressure lines in the same plane. The belt 1 and the rollers 6, 7 are provided with patterns by surfacing them with crepe rubber &c. Endless belts surfaced with crepe rubber &c. may be used in conjunction with the rollers 6, 7. The bricks may be treated successively by sets of rollers, e.g., having different diameters to produce a long pattern on the succession of bricks. The hopper may have a deflecting member to remove surplus sand &c. from the upper surfaces and cause it to fall into adjustable troughs for sanding the ends of the bricks.
