[Class 135] A valve, particularly for water-softeners, comprises a casing 2, Figs. 2 and 3, provided with five branches HI .. HO, and a conical plug 4 or other rotary valve-member such as a disc which is formed with two cross-passages 13, 14 and a branch 15 and can be set in five different positions to determine five different paths of flow. Provision may also be made for setting the plug in a sixth position in which all the ports are cut off. As applied to a water-softener, the ports HO and SI are connected to the inlet and outlet thereof. Normally the flow from the inlet HI is through the ports HO, SI, and soft water is delivered through the port SO. For backflushing. the flow is through the ports HI, SI, HO, and the drain port D. For regeneration, the flow is directed through the ports SI, D, then through the ports HI, HO, SI, D, next all the ports are cut-off, and then is again directed through the ports HI, SI, HO, D. If hard water is required, the flow is directed from the port HI to the port SO. The spindle 6 of the plug passes through a gland 7 and is provided with a spring-washer 17 for holding the plug in engagement with the casing. A pivoted, spring- pressed handle 5 on the spindle is set with reference to marks on a cover 3, and co-operates with pairs of retaining-lugs 9. When a discvalve is employed, the passages open into ports in the flat face of a disc which co-operates with a flat face in a ported casing.
