Abstract

515,438. Lathe &c. tools and tool-holders. O.K. TOOL CO., INC. June 1, 1938, No. 16405. Convention date, March 12, 1938. [Class 83 (iii)] A lathe or like tool-holder comprises a body 10 having a recess 11 in which a bit 12 is secured by means of a wedge 13 extending across the full width of the recess and having a central enlargement 19 fitting on an overhanging part 10b of the body and adapted to receive a clamping screw 18 which operates the wedge to engage the tool bit firmly with its seating 14 and the inclined rear abutment surface 15. The upper surface 12e of the tool bit converges forwardly towards the bottom surface 12c so that the wedge may urge the bit rearwardly and downwardly during clamping. The path of movement of the wedge approximates the direction of the resultant tooling forces on the bit. The. included angle of the wedge is greater than the angle of friction but less than 90 degrees, preferably about 30 degrees, and the inclination of surface 12e to the bottom surface 12c is about 10 degrees. The bit and recess may have complementary serrations 25 to provide means for lateral adjustment of the bit and to prevent twisting movement.
