Abstract

515,389. Carbonizing-apparatus. BRITISH COAL DISTILLATION, Ltd., MACHEN, C., and ARAM, E. H. G. May 31,1938, No. 16294. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] Carbonaceous or other solid materials are heated in a thin layer on a moving hearth, heat being supplied by a thin metal sectionalized roof suspended over the charge by rods which pass through a refractory roof over the metal sections, and are secured to an external framework. In an annular oven the side walls 1 are recessed at 21 to support circular troughs 2, continuous troughs 3 together with cross members 23 providing supports for cover plates 4 which consti-. tute the roof. Suspension rods 6 passing through the roof carry cross shaped supporting members 24. The material is carried on a rotating hearth 5 which is heated by hot gases from a furnace 9, which gases may be mixed with attemperating gases from a return flue 18. The heating gases pass partly through opening 26 in arch 7 to the space 27 above the metal roof, and part, under control of dampers 15, 16, enter spaces 11 to 14 around the hearth. The sectional plates 4 are supported in sand seals formed by the troughs 2, 23, 25, and cross pieces 24, and are free to move under expansion in any direction.
