Abstract

515,375. Valve gear. STARK, F. H. May 30, 1938, No. 16149. [Class 7 (vi)] The sleeve valves of a multi-cylinder engine are actuated by an eccentric having its sheave connected by rigid arms directly to one side of the sleeve valves, means being provided to constrain the sheave so as to impart to the arms an additional to-and-fro movement on the eccentric. Fig. 1 shows the two sleeve valves 13 of a V-engine actuated by an eccentric 15 on. the main crank shaft, the eccentric sheave 14 having arms 18 connected by spherical joints 16 to the sleeve valves, and also a third arm 19 which is, constrained by a crosshead or piston 20 sliding in a cylinder 21. The piston 20 may also serve as a vacuum or pressure pump. In a modification, the four sleeve valves of an X-engine are connected to a single sheave, which is constrained by another arm connected to an additional eccentric sheave on a subsidiary shaft. The driving-eccentric may be provided on an auxiliary shaft driven from the main shaft.
