Abstract
515,046. Scouring leather &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., PRATT, J: W., and HEATHER, C. H. April 22, 1938, Nos. 12046 and 20749.. [Class 60] Relates to machines for scouring surfaces of soles, counters, box toes; or like shoe parts, of the kind wherein the work is fed past a rotary abrading-tool such as an endless band 30, projecting beyond the surface of a work-table 46, by a flexible-surfaced driven feed roller 48 adapted to control the passage of the work, and comprises improvements relating to the feed' of the work, and the removal of dust therefrom. The roller 48 is carried by a frame 56 adjustable along the direction in which the work is fed so as to set the position of the roller relatively to the band 30, the rest end of the frame being mounted on eccentric sheaves fixed on an angularly-adjustable shaft 49. The roller 48 rotates slowly, and comprises a metal hub 64, a hard rubber sleeve 65,' a sleeve 66 of softer rubber and an outer sleeve 67 of spongy rubber with a smooth outer surface. The band 30 passes over rollers 24, 32, driven at a high speed. The table 46 is adjustable about the shaft 49 and is clamped in position by a bolt 52. The band 30 extends through a slot in the table 46, and cover plates 86, 88 are adjusted so as to fall in gaps in front of, and behind the band, the part of the plate 88 next to the band having comb-like teeth. To provide pressure of the roller 48 relatively to the band, springs 82 are attached to the frame 56 and to arms 83 which' may be sprung sideways away from latches 84 on the table 46 to release the pressure; stop screws 80 limit the approach of the roller to the table. The band 30 is cleaned by pushing a brush 42 against it, and dust is removed by a fan in the base of a column 10. Dust is removed from the work by. a reversely-rotating brush 91 situated between feed rollers 92, 93. The brush extends through a slot in a cover plate' 102 across which are bars to support the work. The work is pressed towards the feed-rollers 92, 93, by a plate 106 carried by bell-cranks 105 acted on by springs 110; a separate plate 111 is let into the plate 106 to press the work against the brush, and can yield independently against springs 113. When not required the brush is removed and the plates 88, 102, are replaced by a single plate having an opening so that dust may be removed from the work by the fan. To deal with work such as skived counter blanks, or skived. toe puff blanks, which is marginally skived, a special feed roller is used comprising a metal hub and a red rubber sleeve of medium resilience formed with a series of circumferential slits at each side of a central groove adapted to receive a ring of spongy-rubber, the slitted parts engaging the skived parts and the ring the unskived central part. The cover plate 86 is then replaced by one having a central projecting tongue to co-operate with the ring on the feed roller. For work such as moulded rubber soles having tapered margins, the tongued cover plate is replaced by a member. having a tongue projecting towards the band, the margins of the' work being pressed against the'band by fingers pressed together by springs and adapted to be separated to receive the work. Specifications 11999/14, 243,074, [both in Class 60], 391,875 and 394,720 are referred to.
