[Class 40 (iv)] An auxiliary circuit such as a monitoring circuit or a branch of a distribution system is coupled to a main transmission line by means of a transformer associated with a resistance (which may be the resistance of the secondary winding) in such a way that the impedance, looking back into the transformer &c., is equal to that of the input of the auxiliary circuit itself, or when a narrow band of frequencies is concerned, by means of a substantially self-terminated band pass filter, i.e., one in which the dissipative part of the impedance of the end arm (series or shunt) is equal to the derative impedance at that end at the mid-band frequency. In this case the impedance of the auxiliary circuit is adjusted so that the impedance looking back from the auxiliary circuit to the main circuit equals the impedance-of the auxiliary circuit if the resistive parts of the impedances of the arms nearest the main and auxiliary circuits respectively are regarded as belonging to such circuits and not to the filter. The Specification shows how to calculate the values of the resistance in the case of a filter of " constant k " type.
