[Classes 72 and 82 (i)] In a method of treating cast iron or steel with ferro-alloys, such as those of silicon, manganese, chromium, tungsten or titanium to deoxidise and improve it, a measured quantity of the alloy is sealed within a box or capsule of soft steel plate which is then added to the cast iron or steel in a cupola, furnace or converter, the action of the ferro-alloy upon the metal being delayed after the introduction of the box or by a period of time predetermined by the thickness of the box &c.
