Abstract

513,782. Loading and discharging refuse vehicles. WALKER BROS. (WIGAN), Ltd., WALKER, D., and ELFORD, E. J. March 30, 1938, Nos. 9659 and 28553. [Class 78 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXII] A vehicle for the collection and transport of refuse has a closed body, with a loading opening in the roof at or near the rear end, a discharge door or doors at the rear, a movable floor adapted to act in both directions for packing the load and for discharging through the door respectively, and means for engaging a refuse container so as to lift and tip it to an inverted position with its mouth in the loading opening. In the illustrated form the container is clamped in the two-part securing ring 49 mounted on trunnions and carrying rollers 56 engaging guide rails 47, also being fitted with eyes for the attachment of cables 61 running to a winch 66. As the container is hauled up the guides the projecting arms 59 engage stops 78 and rotate it into the inverted dotted-line position 44. During this inversion a certain amount of vertical play between the securing ring and the container fittings allows the conainer to bump against the ring and so dislodge sticking contents. The contents are discharged through a hole in the roof into the space 38 in the closed interior of the vehicle which can be enlarged as the filling progresses by operating the movable floor by handoperated two-speed gear to move the wall 37 nearer to the front of the vehicle. The charging hole is closed normally by a sliding door 80 connected by cords 86 to a spring roller 87, Fig. 15, at one end and also connected similarly to a spring roller 85 at the other end. Lugs 81 on the main hauling cables 61 engage with the door and open it as the container moves upwards. Also laterally-projecting lugs 95, Figs. 1 and 2, on the hinged lid of the container are engaged by ramps 96 so that the lid is guided into the position shown at 97 when the container is tipped. In some cases the lugs 95 may be detachable and fitted when the container is ready to be hoisted. A ring of bristles 45 prevents escape of dust during the actual transfer of the refuse to the vehicle. The charging hole is formed in a detachable panel which can be removed bodily and replaced by one carrying a door of different shape when different shapes of containers have to be handled at various times. A flexible barrier 98, Fig. 1 prevents entry of dust into the closed mechanismcontaining compartment into which the door 80 slides. For discharging, hinged doors at the rear of the vehicle are opened and the moving floor is operated to push the contents out. This floor may be of telescoping sections instead of an endless belt. In dealing with small containers which can be handled manually, a large guided skip is used at the rear of the vehicle and several containers are tipped into it before it is hoisted and tipped into the vehicle. The skip may be provided with movable screens and hoods to confine dust during the tipping operation. For transporting large containers from the place of use to the vehicle a trolley is used which is normally stowed under the vehicle.
