513,474. Grinding-machines. ATKINS, H. F. March 29, 1938, No. 9531. [Class 60] In a machine for grinding conical surfaces, a grinding-wheel spindle is supported in and rotates independently of a carrier, a slide in which the spindle is mounted being displaceable in an oblique plane relatively to the axis of the carrier so that the spindle which remains always parallel to itself is moved into eccentric and concentric positions relatively to the carrier. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a rotatable carrier 1 is slotted to receive a block 7 in which the shaft of an independently rotatable grinding tool 21 is mounted in ball bearings 5 and the block 7 is urged downwards to dispose the shaft 4 eccentrically in the carrier 5 by a spring 8 which is opposed by an hydraulic piston 12 connected to the block by a rod 15 and link 16, the supply of hydraulic fluid to the piston through passages 13, 14 controlling the position of the piston and the eccentricity of the grinding tool. In an alternative construction the hydraulic means for displacing the block are replaced by mechanical means comprising a reciprocating bar with cam surfaces that act on a pair of slides provided with teeth that engage a wheel connected through a screw-and-nut.
