Abstract

512,427. Specific-gravity estimating-apparatus. PARSONS MARINE STEAM TURBINE CO., Ltd., and PARNALL, W. R. March 1, 1938, No. 6473. [Class 97 (iii)] A column of liquid whose density is to be measured, e.g., brine from an evaporator system, is hydrostatically balanced against a column of standard' liquid, both liquids being continuously circulated and being brought into thermal communication so as to be at the same temperature. As shown, brine flows into the bottom of a vessel 1 at 2 and overflows at the top into the surrounding chamber 3. Water is fed down a helical pipe 5 within the vessel 1 and upwards through an upturned end 6 into a transparent, graduated tube 7. The water escapes from the bottom of the tube 7 and mixes with the brine, allowance being made for this when graduating the scale. The apparatus may be applied to an evaporator system working at a pressure below atmospheric, the jacket then being extended to stand above the top of the tube 7 and being sealed by a cover plate. A non-return valve is provided in the connection between the jacket 3 and brine pump to prevent back flow of brine to the apparatus.
