511,897. Tanning agents. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. Aug. 26, 1938, No. 25151. Convention date, Aug. 26, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group VIII] Tanning agents are made by sulphonating dihydroxydiarylsulphones under energetic conditions, e.g., using chlorsulphonic acid, or at least three molecular proportions of 98 per cent. sulphuric acid at a temperature of at least 110‹ C., and condensing the products with aldehydes. In examples, 4.4<1>-dihydroxydiphenylsulphone is sulphonated to be mono- or di-sulphonic acid, and the product is condensed with formaldehyde. The products may be used alone or in combination with other tanning materials for the preparation of white leather, or they may be used to bleach chrome leather, or for retanning leather made by other means.
