Abstract

511,613. Indiarubber. CARLIN, J. March 29, 1938, No. 9613. [Class 70] [Also in Group IV] Yarns of jute and the like or materials made therefrom are treated with rubber latex, partially dried and treated with a cold vulcanizing agent, e.g. sulphur chloride or a coagulating agent, e.g. acetic or formic acid ; the drying is effected at atmospheric temperature. The process lays loose fibres, and also imparts non- slip properties and resistance to moisture. Yarn from the spool 1 is led through latex in container 2, after brushing, if desired, over grooved rollers 8, 9 which remove excess latex, through the drying frame 10 so that it becomes tacky, over grooved rollers 13, 14 which consolidate the yarn, through tank 15 containing latex mixed with sulphur, zinc oxide or other fillers, if desired, through covered tank 16 containing a cold vulcanizing agent such.as sulphur chloride, over rollers 18, 19 to the rewinding spool 20. Instead of a cold vulcanizing agent, the tank 16 may contain an acid coagulant, in which case the yarn may be subjected to a further drying before being wound up. The apparatus may be adapted for treating several parallel yarns at once, or for treating fabric ; in the latter event, reagents may be applied by spraying instead of by immersion.
