Abstract

511,130. Flash-distilling mixed solutions. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. Feb. 4, 1939, No. 3733. Convention date, Feb. 19, 1938. [Class 32] A process for the recovery of organic oxy compounds such as glycols, glycerol, alcohols, ketones, and the like, from their aqueous solutions containing one or more salts, consists in bringing the aqueous solution into contact with a relatively high-boiling liquid which is substantially immiscible with the oxy compound and in which the salt is preferably insoluble, maintained at such a temperature that the oxy compound and water are flashed off immediately, leaving the salt in solution. The salt may be separated from the liquid which is then recycled to the flash distillation stage. An aqueous solution containing ethylene glycol and salt from a conta iner 1 is led into the flash evaporator 5 in which a hydrocarbon oil, fed by the pipe 6, is kept hot by the steam coil 4. The flashed off glycol, oil and water vapours pass along the conduit 11 to the condenser 12, where they form two layers in the separator 13, The oil is drained from the glycol into a tank 26, whence it is passed through the heater 10 back to the evaporator 5. The glycol-water mixture, free from salt, is drained into the storage tank 16 by the pipe 15. The salt is discharged from the evaporator into the tank 19, carrying considerable oil with it. This oil is recovered and passed to the tank 26 by the aid of a series of settling tanks 22 and 23.
