Abstract
510,923. Gas burners; pilot-jets. BRITISH FURNACES, Ltd. (Surface Combustion Corporation). July 21, 1938, No. 21686. [Classes 75 (i) and 75 (iii)] In a heat radiator tube 10 to which gas is supplied through an annular chamber 20 and pipes 19 for combustion with air drawn into the tube by a suction producing device, such as a fluid ejector, the ignition of the gas is maintained irrespective of pulsations in the tube by means of an atmospheric pilot burner 34 firing tangentially into a chamber 31 intermediate the ends of a passage 32 in a refractory body 30 so that the flame moves in a helical path along the passage before emerging from the tubular extension 28 into the path of flow of the gas. The chamber 20 is connected by spaced bars 23 to a ring 24 secured to a ledge 25 on the mouth 21 of the tube 10. In the pilot burner 34, gas issuing from the nozzle 39 entrains some air into a short mixing-tube 42 and the mixture issuing from the latter entrains the balance of the air into the mixing passage 36 in the refractory body 35. An air regulator 46 is mounted on the nozzle 39. The end 33 of the passage 32 is preferably open to serve as an inspection and lighting hole and prevent extinction of the pilot flame by pulsations coming from the tube 10, holes 29 being provided in the tube 28 to dampen the pulsations. Gas may be supplied through a tube 46a, under control of a valve 47, to extend the name issuing from the tube 28.
