Abstract
510,786. Burning and sintering. AHLMANN,N. Jan. 5, 1938, No. 345. [Class 51 (ii)] In the burning and sintering of finegrained materials, heat is economized by causing gases, which have passed through a layer of the materials, to flow through a recuperative layer where the residual heat of the gases is absorbed, such heat being subsequently recovered by passing air to be heated through the recuperative layer. In the apparatus shown, a layer 7 of the material to be treated is spread upon a recuperative layer 6 carried by the travelling grate 1. Cold air is passed from the pipe 12 upwards through the two layers just before they leave the chamber 14, and the heat absorbed by the air is transferred to the charge at, the opposite end of the chamber by passing the hot air downwards through the layers to exhaust 11. Heating may be effected by a burner 15 or by the combustion of fuel mixed with the charge. In a modification, Fig. 2, not shown, the hot air is used to preheat the charge. The recuperative layer may consist of cement clinker or masses of chains or similar elements having a large surface and heat capacity and may be arranged above or below the charge, or both above and below.
