Abstract
510,678. Chlorine dioxide. EVANS. C. H. Feb. 1, 1938, Nos. 3123/38 and 3402/39. [Class 1 (ii)] In the production of chlorine dioxide from a chlorate and an acid, the two reactants are dissolved and the solutions are mixed so that the mixed solution at any stage of the reaction does not mix to any substantial extent during the production of chlorine 'dioxide with the mixed solution at any other stage of the reaction, or with the products formed thereby. In the method of carrying out the invention particularly described, a tank 1 contains a 33 per cent. sodium chlorate solution, and a tank 2 contains a mixture of nine parts sulphuric acid, six parts of water and 85 parts of conc. hydrochloric acid. These liquids flow through the pipes shown to a helical channel 7 in a reaction vessel 4. The chlorine and chlorine dioxide gases evolved are drawn through an outlet 21 by an air b]ast ejector 12, and then separated. They pass through a cooler 14 before reaching the outlet 21. The temperature may be controlled by a water jacket 10. Gases are removed from the spent liquid 20 by blowing air through it from a pipe 17.
