Abstract
510,189. Pile-fabric looms. PLATT BROS. & CO., Ltd., and AUSTIN, F. W. Feb. 7, 1938, No. 3726. [Class 142 (ii)] In a loom for weaving Royal Axminster carpets &c., two wefts are inserted by upper and lower needles A. a, Fig. 6, shaped to fit into the forwardly tapering upper and lower parts of the shed, and guided and supported solely by the warps. After passing through the shed, the needles pass between selvage cord containers D, d furnished with large pirns, pivoted fingers &c. f working over grooves d<3> in the container noses causing the weft to return over and under the containers and thus around respective selvage cords. The containers are supported by grooved jaws g<2> on outer and inner pairs of lever arms G, g, which are successively withdrawn from supporting position to allow for the passage of the weft loops. In operation, the lever arms allow the bottom weft to slip off the lower container, but retain the top weft temporarily on the upper container as shown at c', Fig. 3. The tube frame is then inserted between the front and rear parts c<2>, c<3> of the top weft, but behind both parts of the lower weft. The tube frame straightens up, the top weft is allowed to slip off the upper container, the tension pulling this weft tight against the selvage cord e' and moving the rear part c<3> forwards towards the tube' frame. This rises and dwells whilst the part c<3> is beaten up, and then rises further to draw off the correct length of tuft yarn. The lay then retires, the under reed turns up the tufts and the shed changes. The needles may have longitudinal flanges a<1>, a<2> and be each equipped with a permanently threaded eye and a slip eye. In addition, the lower needle has a guide on its underside. The needles may be tubular or have one or more longitudinal bearing ribs.
