[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XII] In the cooling, heating, or other treatment of pulverulent or granular material by air or gas, the latter is passed in a finely-distributed state gently through the material 14 while it is supported on a gas-pervious bed 4 consisting for example, of chamotte, pumice stone or porous glass or quartz, the material being in consequence "fluffed up " so that it assumes a liquidlike state enabling it to flow over the bed 4. Fig. 1 shows a construction in which the material is supplied at 6 and passes to the outlet 10 over a barrier 8 adjustable in height, the air or gas being supplied at 3 to the space 2 below the bed 4 and inlets 12, 13 being provided for the supply, if desired, of additional treatment gases or liquids, e.g., carbon dioxide and atomised water. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the space below the bed 4 is divided into separate compartments 15 ... 18 each connected to the air or gas supply conduit 3 by an opening controlled by a damper 19. A further construction is described in which the material passes downwardly in succession over a plurality of superposed beds 4 below which are separate chambers each supplied with the treatment air or gas.
