Abstract
509,832. Apparatus for making tufts and trimmings. WEBB, E.-.J., and WEBB & SONS (TUFTS), Ltd., E. Jan. 19, 1938, No. 1771. [Class 52 (iv)] [Also in Group VII] Apparatus for making tufts for upholstery comprises a guide tube and hollow , shaft 6<1> through which the rove 7 is fed by spring- controlled rollers 20 rotated from the driven shaft 2 through gearing 22, pawl and ratchet 23, spring-controlled crank-shaft 24 and cam 25 fixed to shaft 2, the hollow shaft 6<1> having rotatably mounted on it a hub 6 driven through gearing 6<4> from the shaft 2 and having arms 9, 91 and 12 carrying the thread 10 to the spring- controlled latch hook 13 on a bar 14 reciprocated through crank lever 18 and cam 17 from shaft 2 and working in conjunction with the stationary knife 19 to bind and knot the rove. A spring clip 26 is provided by which a loop of thread 27, Fig. 4, can be manually attached at intervals to the bound and knotted rove as it is fed through the rollers 20. The rove is cut into lengths to form the tufts, Fig. 4, by a knife 28 moving between longitudinally adjustable guides 29 and reciprocated through eccentric 30, 31 fixed to the shaft 2.
