Abstract

509,611. Cooling cement. RONNE, E. Jan. 18, 1938, No. 1697. [Class 51 (ii)] In a rotary kiln process for the manufacture of cement the clinker is cooled rapidly immediately after sintering from a temperature of about 1300‹ C. to a temperature of 1100- 1200‹ C. by mixing it in the kiln with already cooled clinker, which may be the clinker from the same kiln after it has been cooled down to 200‹ C. or below. In the apparatus shown, the hot clinker from the kiln 1 is discharged into cooling-tubes 2 surrounding and rotating with the kiln, and the discharge ends of alternate tubes are connected by helical pipes 4 with feed openings 7 immediately below a dam ring 8 situated at the hottest point of the sintering zone. The inlets to the pipes 4 may be controlled by sliding plates, and as a considerable length of the pipes will be filled by cool clinker, entry of air through the openings 7 will be prevented. In a modification, the tubes 2 are so arranged that their discharge ends lie adjacent the end of the sintering-zone, and in this case, a direct connection can be made for the return of cooled clinker. These connections are closed by flaps which are opened to allow passage of the clinker into the kiln only when the ends of the return connections are beneath the charge.
