Abstract
509,244. Controlling aircraft. PHILLIPS & POWIS AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and HEAL, L. C. Dec. 8, 1937, No. 34004. [Class 4] In an aircraft wing a flap 15 is nested and adapted to be pivoted on linkwork 19 rearwardly and angularly depressed to increase the angle of incidence. The flap is shown partly extended in Figs. 1 and 3. When the flap is nested between the wing parts 13, 14, the whole forms a streamline section. The axes of the pivots 21 connecting the links 19 to the flaps are inclined rearwardly in the extended position of the flap and the pivots 21 are connected to the flap by pivots 23. With this construction, the inclination of the flap is decreased, as it is swung into its nested position, to the horizontal when it is fully housed within the wing. The flaps are operated by hydraulic jacks 25 and levers 33. The gap formed between the wing and the flap when the latter is extended may be closed by resilient flaps. The flap is provided with a landing flap 34A and an aileron 34, the control of which is transmitted to the flaps by a chain 43 looped round sprockets on the link pivots 20, 21, in order that movement of the aileron should be independent of movement of the flap. A cable and pulley or link and lever system may be substituted for this arrangement. The landing flap 34A may be similarly controlled or may be operated dependently of the flap 15. Each link 19 may be replaced by two links of unequal length to give the necessary inclination of the flap. Specification 504,336 is referred to.
