508,327. Non-conducting coverings for sound; compound sheet materials ; paper. BERTOG, W. H. March 19, 1938, Nos. 8527 and 8528. Convention dates, March 19, 1937 and Jan. 20, 1938. [Class 64 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] In a sound-absorbing covering comprising a main sheet 1 of resilient or compressible material and a covering sheet 2 of compacted fibrous material having imperforate raised parts 4 bounded by groove-like depressed parts 5, 6, the sheets being united at intervals along the grooves, the walls of the depressed parts are at least in part loosened or thinned by stretching. Materials specified for the main sheet comprise felt, hair felt, rag felt, or other loosely felted fibrous material or loose fabric layers ; and for the covering sheet comprise paper, paper stock, asbestos fibre or paper and compacted rag felt. The raised parts are preferably rectangular and only the depressed parts running in one direction may be bounded by loosened or thinned walls. A plane sheet such as paper or fabric may be interposed between the main and covering sheets. The covering layer may comprise more than one layer, such as two, the upper of the two layers being the more compact. Asbestos paper over rag felt is specified. The covering sheet may be produced by passing a layer of compacted fibrous material between a pair of rollers one of which is provided with ridges parallel to and also transverse to the axis and the other with similarly arranged grooves. The longitudinal grooves of the sheet are thereby stretched out and the traverse groove folded or gathered in.
