Abstract
507,833. Turning helically twisted pump &c. members. ROTATIVE MECHANISMS, Ltd. Nov. 23, 1938, No. 34089. Convention date, Nov. 24, 1937. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] In a method of turning a helically twisted member 2, Fig. 2, for a pump or compressor, the member is rotated about its own axis while this axis is given an eccentric rotation, the numbers of revolutions of the work about its own axis and of this axis about the eccentric axis being slightly different. A cutting tool 4 is fed by a screw 11 along the work 2 which is mounted for rotation on a mandrel 6, the axis of which corresponds to that of the work. End pieces on the mandrel are carried in bearings arranged to give the mandrel an eccentric rotation relative to the work. The work, lead screw, and mandrel, are driven through gearing from an electric motor 8 and belt 9. The gearwheel 16 is integral with the mandrel 6 and rotates through wheels 17-20, a wheel 21 driving by an " Oldham " or similar coupling 22, 23, the work 2. The ratio of the revolutions of the work about its own axis and the revolutions of the mandrel about its axis is arranged to be nŒ 1 /n, so that n is the number of revolutions of the work corresponding to an advance of the tool of one pitch length.
