Abstract

507,003. Hypodermic needles. EVERETT, S. J. Dec. 7, 1937, No. 33786. [Class 81 (ii)] A safety device for a. hypodermic needle 1 comprises a wire 4, preferably of an alloy of nickel and copper, (3: 1), lying beside, and secured as by soldering to the needle, at a point 5 within the part arranged to penetrate the flesh, and preferably secured also to the upper end of the needle, for example, within the mount 2. Alternatively, the wire may be secured to the needle throughout its length. The wire is pared down as shown at its lower end, and it may be of round, half-round or other crosssection, and its diameter is preferably about a quarter of that of the needle. An additional strengthening wire 9 of larger diameter and shorter length may be secured to the upper part of the needle. The mount 2 may have a stop, for example, a metal sleeve pushed over a cylindrical portion 7 of the mount, to limit the penetration of the needle ; the sleeve may be constricted or provided with indentations at its lower end to contact or grip the needle. For double-ended needles the wire 4 may extend to and be secured beneath the central ball-mounting, and a wire such as 9 may extend from the mounting to the inner end of the needle ; or one or both wires may extend through the mounting towards the opposite end of the needle. The wires strengthen the needle and permit withdrawal or prevent wandering in cases of breakage in the flesh. The Provisional Specification describes a stop comprising a spring strip having holes, of triangular shape with one rounded side, at its ends, the needle being passed through the holes after flexing the strip and being gripped thereby, the strip preferably having projections to facilitate handling:
