Abstract

506,524. Stuffing - box substitutes. HURST, W. F. F. MARTIN-, and PACKLESS GLAND CO., Ltd. Nov. 29, 1937, No. 32958. [Class 122 (v)] The working parts are carried by a tubular guide member 4 fixed to the casing 3 by bolts 5. A sleeve 7 slides in the part 4 and has a head 8 which is a sliding fit therein. A pin 10 received in a slot 11 prevents relative rotation of tho sleeve. A carbon &c. block 12 is fixed to the head 8 and is pressed against a seating ring 2a on the part 2. A fluid-pressure operated cup-leather 14 is fixed to the part 4 and engages the sleeve. 7. Alternatively a synthetic rubber ring may be used. The spring engages a metal ring 15 supported by a flanged metal ring 16 which bears on the cup-leather 14. The diameter of the sleeve where it passes through the ring 14 may be so chosen in comparison with the diameter of the ring 12 that the fluid-pressure assists or opposes the spring pressure on the ring 12.
