Abstract
505,983. Medicines ; cosmetics ; beverages ; making extracts. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Nov. 17, 1937, Nos. 31629/37 and 33197/38. (Classes 14 (ii) and 81 (i)] (Also in Groups III, IV, and VIII] Preparations which are stable and homogeneously dilutable with water or aqueous media to form clear emulsions or solutions comprise organic compounds which are diffi. cultly soluble in water but soluble in organic. solvents to which water-soluble phosphatides such as lysolecithin and lysocephalin and synthetic products of analogous constitution are added. Suitable organic compounds include vegetable extracts obtained by organic solvents, essential oils, fats, and sterols and their derivatives. In the case of vegetable extracts, the phosphatides may be added to the plant to be extracted, to the extraction solvents, or to the final extracts, and extracts of camomile, peppermint, wormwood, juniper, &c. may be made and used in the production of liqueurs, wines, cosmetics and as additions to baths. Other phosphatides such as lecithin may be used in addition, and basic substances, e.g. alkali hydroxides or carbonates, ammonia or organic amines may also be added and in which case a smaller amount of the phosphatide may be used. According to examples : (1) dry sage crude extract is shaken with a dilute alcoholic solution of lysolecithin, and the solution may be diluted with water without separation; (2) sage oil dissolved in an alcoholic solution of lysolecithin gives a milky emulsion on dilution with water; (3) valerian crude extract is similarly treated; (4) chenopodium is dissolved in an alcoholic solution containing lecithin and lysolecithin, and forms a homogeneous emulsion on dilution; (5) dried elder flowers or sage leaves are extracted with an alcoholic solution of lysolecitliin. The addition of lysolecithin increases the yield of extract ; (6) artemisia absynthium is extracted hot with an alcoholic solution of lysolecithin. No separation occurs on dilution and the solution may be used in the production of wines and liqueurs (vermouth) ; (8) oleic acid triglyceride is dissolved in an alcoholic solution of lysolecithin or a similar synthetic phosphatide. The emulsion formed on dilution with water may be used for cosmetic purposes, or for treating leather. Specification 417,715 is referred to.
