505,979. Sensitizing dyestuffs for photography. GROVES, W. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Nov. 16, 1937, No. 31479: [Class 98 (ii)] Dyestuffs. for sensitizing photographic emulsions comprise symmetrical or unsymmetrical carbocyanines containing the benzimidazole nucleus and supposed to have the general. formula R1 is alkyl or aryl, R2 is alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, R3 is alkyl'or aralkyl, X is an acid residue such as Cl, Br, I, SO4, ClO4 or paratoluene sulphonate. Substituents may be present at any position in the benzene rings and in the aryl and aralkyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom. The benzene rings may carry fused-on benzene rings. The symmetrical dyestuffs are made by treating the benzimidazolium salt in chloroform, bromoform or iodoform with an alkyline condensing agent as described in Specification 32683 /38. Orthoformic acid ester synthesis. is also applicable. The unsymmetrical dyestuffs are made by reacting a heterocyclic #-aldehyde with a benzimidazolium halide in the presence of a condensing agent, e.g. pyridine or piperidine, as described in Specification 32222/38.
