Abstract

503,884. Portable grinding-machines. BLACK & DECKER MANUFACTURING CO. March 17, 1938, No. 8261. Convention date, March 23, 1937. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A portable power-driven rotary tool for drilling, tapping, sanding, grinding, polishing, &c. has the tool arranged transversely or at an angle to the axis of the motor which operates through gearing in a casing shaped to be held in the palin of the operator's hand with the fingers extending downwards towards a nose on the casing adjacent the tool chuck. In one form the machine comprises a cylindrical casing 2 containing a motor 1 and having attached at one end a brush and switch housing 3 and at the other end, by a screw-thread 11, a ring 12 carrying a bearing 10 for the motor shaft 5. A gear casing 4 is screwed at 14 to an internal boss on the ring 12 and carries bearings 18, 19 for the tool spindle 23 which is arranged at right-angles to the motor and is driven therefrom through gearing 22. A fan 6 on the motor shaft draws cooling air for the motor through holes 7 in the casing and discharges it through passages 8 in the ring 12 to the exterior of the gear case to cool it sufficiently for handling. The machine is adapted to be held in the palm of the hand, as shown in Fig. 10, and grooves 9 are provided in the gear case in line with the passages 8 to prevent these passages from being obstructed by the hand. A slot 33 at the bottom of the ring 12 directs air to the vicinity of the rool 13. An extension 15 of the gear case encloses the chuck and forms a safe abutment for the operator's fingers. The direction of air through the machine may be reversed. In a modification, the motor casing 53, Fig. 6, is screwed directly at 55 to the gear case 44, and the air ducts 43 are formed in the latter. The lower slot 45 is of considerable extent to allow the passage of air even if several of the ducts 43 are obstructed by the operator's hand. In a further modification, annular air ducts 68, Fig. 8, of large cross-section lead straight through the gear case 65, and the lower duct 66 communicates with an annular passage 61<1>.
