[Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Unsulphonated azo dyes are made in substance, on a substratum or on the fibre by coupling with an arylide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid a diazo compound of an amine of the general formula in which R is a hydrocarbon residue, e.g. alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl or a heterocyclic residue and in which the benzene nucleus carrying the amino group may contain further substituents. In examples : (1) diazotized 3-aminophthalic acid N-ethylimide is coupled with 2: 3-oxynaphthoic acid-2<1>-methoxyanilide; (2) cotton is impregnated with 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid anilide and developed with the diazo compound of (1) in presence of sulphate of alumina (orange). Specifications 6379/12, [Class 2 (iii)], and 17279/13, [Class 15 (ii)], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the coupling of diazo compounds of amines of the above formula with any coupling component. Amines when R=aryl are specified. Wool or cotton dyes are obtained when sulphonated components are used. Specified additional coupling components are arylides of carboxylic acids, e.g. aromatic oxycarboxylic acids such as p-cresotinic acids, xylenol, chlorcresol, oxydiphenylamino, oxycarbazole and oxynaphthocarbazole carboxylic acids, 2 : 3-oxyanthracene carboxylic acid or acids containing reactive -CH2-CO- groups, for instance acetoacetic acid, benzoylacetic acid or terephthaloylacetic acid. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
